New Mural in Batten Student Center a Historic Selfie
"I wanted it to be something that represented the idea of the liberal arts and VWC," says senior art and psychology major Caitlyn Hogge, whose winning mural design graces a large wall in the Marlin Grill. "I thought it was important to choose people who were diverse."
"Seflie" is the fitting title of the work, which features likenesses of musician Bob Marley, Indian activist Mahatma Gandhi, silver screen icon Marilyn Monroe, Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo taking a group selfie.
The mural took several weeks for the Marlin Mural Team to complete beginning in November. The idea to place a student-designed mural in that location came from Jason Seward, Dean of Freshmen and Director of the Batten Center, who worked with Batten Associate Professor of Art John Rudel and students in Rudel's ART 406 Drawing/Painting Lab course on the project. Students presented proposals based on a prospectus to a committee of students, faculty and administrators.

Thank You for Helping VWC Students "Make a Life" in 2016!
Thank you to alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends who made gifts to The Excellence Fund in 2016. Winston Churchill said: "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." Your contributions help our graduates "make a living" by providing them with valuable academic experiences that prepare them for the future. Of equal importance, they also demonstrate to our students that we "make a life" by what we give. If you didn't have the opportunity to make a tax-deductible contribution to The Excellence Fund before December 31 in support of academic initiatives, library and technology resources, student life and athletics, you may do so in 2017! Visit to make your gift today. You may also view The Wesleyan Society listing of leadership donors .
