Recognizing Outstanding Performance in Athletics
The annual BOB Awards were held on May 9

Each year the VWU Athletics Department recognizes outstanding student-athletes, coaches, and teams in a variety of categories. The 2018 award winners were announced at The BOB Awards Ceremony on May 9.
Congratulations to the following award winners (voted on by the coaches):
Norfolk Sports Club Award - Each year the Norfolk Sports Club presents an award to the outstanding male or female student-athlete at Virginia Wesleyan. This award will also be presented in late May at the monthly Norfolk Sports Club Luncheon.
Award Winner: Marissa Coombs (WCC, WTI, WTO)
Female Senior Athlete of the Year: Cassetty Howerin (SB)
Male Senior Athlete of the Year: Brandon Kussmaul (BASE)
MAC – Donald M Forsyth Award - Awarded to a male and female sophomore or junior student-athlete that contributes to their team(s) through leadership, enthusiasm, and work ethic. The individuals also show leadership involvement in college community affairs (dorms, clubs, organizations) while maintaining a respectable academic achievement.
Female Award Winner: Hanna Hull (SB)
Male Award Winner: Gavin Fry (MCC, MTI, MTO)
Male and Female Freshman of the Year Award - Recognizes a male and female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the first collegiate season. The individuals must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and also be returning in the fall semester.
Female Award Winner: Anna Pedicone (WSOC)
Male Award Winner: Tyree Golston (MBB)
Elaine F. Sears Courage Award - Recognizes a male or female student-athlete who exhibits extraordinary courage in their personal life and/or athletic performance by overcoming an injury, physical handicap, or living through personal hardships. The individual has overcome challenges life has dealt them and strives for success while proving to be an inspiration and role model to his or her peers.
Award Winner: Madison Glaubke (SB)
Team of the Year Award - Recognizes the student-athletes and coaching staff of a men’s or women’s team that excelled in the regular season and/or during post season competition.
Award Winner: Softball
Student-Athlete in a Supporting Role - Recognizes a male and female student-athlete who is always willing to help their fellow teammates. They are usually not in the starting lineups or sometimes sidelined by a season-ending injury. These are student-athletes whose personalities and ambition play an integral part in their team’s success.
Female Award Winner: Kellen Phillips (WBB & WTEN)
Male Award Winner: Patrick McKneely (MSW)
Coaching Staff of the Year - Honors the coaching staff of a men’s or women’s team that has dedicated themselves to their team.
Award Winner: Softball
Faculty Team Advisor: Crit Muniz

Heart of a Marlin Award - Honors an individual who embodies everything it means to be a Marlin. They are a dedicated supporter of the athletics department.
Award Winner: Corey White (MBB)
Comeback Player of the Year Award - Honors a male or female student-athlete who suffered an injury but fought back to overcome and finish the season.
Award Winner: Morgan Lucas (WSW)
Upset of the Year Award - Awarded to the individual or team that overcame the toughest opponent during regular or post season play.
Award Winner: Baseball sweeps #4 Roanoke on the road
Play of the Year Award - Recognizes the top individual performance in a single game or competition by a male or female student-athlete.
Award Winner: Marissa Coombs winning individual ODAC Cross Country Championship at home
Performance of the Year Award - Recognizes the top team performance in a single game or competition by a men’s or women’s team.
Award Winner: Women’s 4x400m relay team won Outdoor Track & Field ODAC Championship

W.B. Shafer Jr. Scholar-Athlete Award - Recognizes the male and female student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade point average from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes.
Female Recipient- R Kellen Phillips,3.98
Male Recipient- Andreas Combos, 3.92
Academic Team of the Year - Recognizes the men’s or women’s team that excels academically in the classroom through their hard work and dedication.
