Jill Sturts and Lauren Stephens led a workshop titled "Beyond Surviving: Strategies for Thriving in Pedagogical Design, Student Support, and Faculty Expectations" at The Academy of Leisure Sciences annual conference in Philadelphia, PA.

Lauren Stephens also co-led a workshop titled "'Tool or Crutch?': Making Students the Experts Through Their Lived Experience" with colleagues from Penn State Abington and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, at The Academy of Leisure Sciences annual conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

and Nick Roster (Northwestern Michigan College) facilitated the virtual workshop "Intentional Facilitation Plans: Beyond the Basics" in the POGIL eSeries. They guided participants through reflective and collaborative exercises to develop strategies that strengthen classroom engagement, streamline team interactions, and support smoother learning experiences for students.

OTHER

oversaw all in-water safety for the 33rd Annual Virginia Special Olympics Polar Plunge and oversaw 115 (plus 1 K9) safety divers and rescue swimmers to support the 3,000 plungers at the main plunge and 600 middle and high school plungers for the Cool School Challenge. The participants raised a record $1.7 million for Special Olympics VA.

On February 20, Lauren Stephens was recognized as a nominee for the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year for the School of Education at the University of South Carolina Aiken's annual Alumni Award Celebration in Aiken, SC. She is pictured here with her nominator, Dr. Bridget Coleman, Professor of Education at USCA.


Stephens was also elected to a three-year term as an at-large member of the Board of Directors for The Academy of Leisure Sciences.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Allied Health and Nursing majors in BIO 202 Human Nutrition, led by Joyce Easter, learned about food insecurity by researching food access in a local neighborhood and a community agency addressing food access, applying their course knowledge in creating a nutritious recipe for a family of four with only $10, and assembling four meal kits donated to Thrive Peninsula.

moderated a panel and facilitated roundtable discussions at the Climate and Energy Resilience Town Hall in Portsmouth, VA. Five of their students assisted with the event, taking notes for roundtables and organizing a tree giveaway. The event brought together experts, advocates, and community members to build a more just, sustainable, and resilient community for all.
