Federal Work-Study

Students with proven financial need are eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program. Students MUST complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be eligible for work-study funding. The total award for on-campus work-study is $2,500 annually. In return, students are required to work a minimum 10 hours each week for the academic year. Students will be paid the federal minimum wage for their work on campus.

Institutional policies for the Federal Work-Study Program allow eligible work-study students to apply for a position of their choice. Each academic year, ALL eligible work-study students must apply online for work-study positions by viewing the job openings and completing an online application beginning the first Monday in August. Students may earn up to the amount awarded on the award letter and are paid by check twice a month. The amount of each check will be based on the number of hours the student worked within the pay period (a minimum of 10 hours each week required).

  2. Must be full-time, degree-seeking, and maintain satisfactory academic progress

This position is for 10-12 hours per week. The position involves assisting faculty in the Watts and Birdsong schools.

Possible projects and tasks include:

Chemistry- Lab Assistant

This position requires a student who is able to perform the following: Prepare solutions for lab experiments, set up and take down equipment used in lab experiments, consolidate waste materials in appropriate storage containers, maintain the stockroom in working order, maintain an up to date chemical inventory. Student is expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.Ìý Interested students should be or planning to be a science major and completion of a year of general chemistry is preferred.

Physics- Lab Assistant

A primary task is setting up physics labs: Ìý After being instructed on the function of one laboratory station the student will set up the remaining 7 (identical) stations Ìýand check the equipment for operation before laboratories.Ìý The student will then take down the lab stations, and put the equipment away, and set up the next weeks lab.Ìý The student will communicate with the physics instructors in person, and via email. Ìý Additional responsibilities include: keeping the lab tidy, helping with copying/scanning, proofreading labs, and aiding the physics instructors as requested.Ìý STEM major preferred.

Athletics, Sports Information

Student worker will be expected to perform a variety of traditional sports information and newer multimedia assignments.

These will include:

  • webcasting
  • broadcasting
  • filming and editing
  • photography
  • on-field/court duties
  • public address announcing
  • statistical work
  • operating a scoreboard, game clock, shot clock
  • and other administrative duties as assigned.

Applicants should have a knowledge of athletics along with their rules and regulations as well as a flexible schedule and the ability to work nights and weekends. Those with photography experience as well as experience with Stat Crew software, video editing software, and/or broadcasting are highly encouraged to apply, but are not requirements for employment.

Athletic Training Student Worker

Athletic trainers, in the collegiate setting, are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians and other allied health care professionals in the care of the student-athletes on campus.Ìý

The services provided by the athletic training department comprise of:

  • prevention
  • emergency care
  • clinical diagnosis
  • and therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions for VWU varsity athletes.

As a student aid, it is your responsibility to assist the athletic training staff with the daily duties and tasks of the athletic training facility in an attempt to create an efficient and effective health care facility.Ìý

The student aid will be charged with duties including, but not limited to:

  • laundry
  • cleaning
  • restocking
  • water preparation
  • practice and game set-up
  • and administrative tasks

Some lifting is required.Ìý In this position you will in no way be helping with athletic training services (as listed above).Ìý You will only be responsible for assisting the staff in non-athletic training duties that support the facility's daily function.

Hours are available in the morning and afternoon.Ìý Applicants should be very reliable, responsible, independent, dependable and capable of taking initiative.Ìý Non-student-athletes are preferred.

The student worker will assist the Office of Enrollment Services’ leadership team through administrative and event planning responsibilities. The student will engage in clerical functions such as:

Campus Life, Student Engagement Assistant

The Student Engagement Assistant provides friendly service and accurate information to student leaders, clubs, and organizations.

Typical duties include:

  • confirming logistics for events
  • marketing upcoming activities
  • maintaining records
  • and monitoring supplies

Duties are divided among six Student Engagement Assistants.

Office Manager

The Office Manager anchors the Office, represents the office at college functions, maintains office appearance, provides hospitality to visitors, facilitates volunteer sign ups, plans and implements projects, and keeps the volunteer database and social media accounts.

Professionalism, creativity, and proficiency with Excel, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms is required. The Office Manager reports to the Director of Wesleyan Engaged.
Wesleyan Engaged has 10 functional areas that our programs fall under.Ìý Outside of these positions, workers will work in the office completing tasks as directed by the Director and Office Manager.

Animals

The director of the functional area regarding Animals works on projects focusing on aiding animals.Ìý The individual will work with the Chesapeake 10 Billion partnership to add 10 billion oysters to the Chesapeake Bay by 2024 among other projects (including the Norfolk SPCA and other agencies).Ìý

Community Development

The director of the functional area regarding Community Development will work on projects that focus on the communities surrounding the Òùµ´ÉÙ¸¾ campus and throughout Hampton Roads, including the Western Bayside Community Partnership, Tranquility by the Lakes Home, and hurricane clean-up.

Environment

The director will develop and implement a comprehensive environmental awareness campaign that creates a commitment to stewardship through sustainable practices in all facets of campus life. The individual will also work with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Lynnhaven River Now, Elizabeth River Project, and local organizations to arrange clean-ups of beaches, environmental programs, as well as hurricane clean-ups.

Hampton Roads Public Schools

The director will oversee the Marlins Read Program and Marlins Count Program and the school site(s) where the program is offered and serve as a mentor to one child in the program. Other responsibilities include record keeping for the program, recruitment and training of a volunteer team(s), communication with the school(s) Marlins Read/Count Coordinators, and driving the van. A valid driver’s license is required and you must also pass a background check to be able to drive the Wesleyan Engaged van. Only upperclassmen will be considered.

Health and Human Services

The director will develop and implement programs that focus on housing, hunger, and health related issues, which could include working at CHKD, Sentara, and other local hospitals.Ìý The individual will aid in the oversight of the campus blood drives and any other potential volunteer health initiatives on the campus.Ìý The director will also work with local organizations, such as Heritage United Methodist Church, soup kitchens, and FoodBank of SW Virginia, to develop volunteer opportunities that meet the hunger needs in our community, namely: assistance in the church food pantry, including at scheduled weekend distributions; and, development of a regularly offered community supper which the applicant will coordinate and manage on site. The other area will be working with Shelter during January session in the area of housing, as well as other opportunities throughout Virginia Beach and through the Western Bayside Community Partnership.Ìý

Facilities Management, Technician

The position will serve as a student maintenance technician and provide support to the Facilities Management department under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. This is a hands on position, assisting with all aspects of the University’s maintenance plan.

Facility Management- Sustainability

The position will serve as a work study sustainability administrator and provide support to the Physical Plant department under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Physical Plant Operations. The work study student will be eager about sharing information about energy efficiency, recycling and transportation while combining research methods to assist VWU’s sustainability efforts.

    • Can calculate distances in travel.
    • Be able to conduct surveys and work with various departments on campus
    • Work close with the PEIC committee on campus and the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in the Greer Environmental Sciences Center.
    • Be eager to know more about reducing the carbon footprint on campus

    • Be responsible for streamlining processes in acquiring viable information for sustainability practices at VWU.
    • Will assist the staff with other administrative needs as needed.

Learning Center, Office Assistant

The Learning Center is recruiting responsible Work Study eligible students who:

  • exhibit discretion in dealing with student information
  • trustworthiness when handling tests
  • professionalism when interacting with professors
  • and a positive "Go-Getter" attitude towards fulfilling any task that is thrown at them during their shift

The work study may be asked to perform the following duties:

  • staffing the front desk
  • answering phones
  • sitting in while students are taking tests
  • delivery and pick up of testing materials
  • typing up various documents for the other Learning Center Administrative Staff
  • serving as a scribe (note-taker) for students with disabilities
  • and/or recording tests and texts, copying of materials and assisting in light cleaning

Greer Center, Landscaping and Plant Support

Students will work with staff to help maintain the extensive landscaping around the Greer Environmental Sciences Center, including the green roof and the plantings around the building and the stormwater ponds. Students will work in a team to pull weeds, water plants, and maintain the gardens.ÌýSecondary responsibilities could include the maintenance of the greenhouse plants, assisting with maintenance of the aquatics facility, special event setup, or additional Greer Center support, as needed. Students will report to Brian O'Neill, Director of Living Landscapes, and to Elizabeth Malcolm.

Greer Center, Aquatic Support

The student will work to help maintain the Aquatic Lab in the GreerEnvironmental Sciences Center.Ìý Responsibilities will include feeding animals, cleaning tanks, daily monitoring of water quality for bothfreshwater and saltwater systems, and monthly maintenance of pumps and filters.Ìý Some weekend hours will be necessary for animalmaintenance.Secondary responsibilities could include giving tours to prospective students, special event setup, or additional Greer Center support, as needed. The student will report to Dr. Soraya Bartol.

Hofheimer Library, Librarian/Interlibrary Loan Coordinator

Student needed to assist Librarian/Interlibrary Loan Coordinator in processing interlibrary loans between VWU library and other institutions.

Tasks include:

  • processing incoming and outgoing loans
  • preparing items for shipment
  • checking out/in library materials
  • scanning items for electronic shipment

Computer skills are required (intermediate level preferred), with the ability to have attention to detail and enough self-discipline to occasionally work independently.

Preference is for a first-year student who can learn the system progressively over time to achieve an advanced level of expertise, with the idea that they would occupy the position, if possible, over a 4-year period.

Hofheimer Library, Library Technical Services Student Assistant

This position will involve assisting with a variety of library technical services activities, including the following:

  • Digital collections (digitization, file management, inventory, social media, and metadata).
  • Stacks maintenance for special collections. Basic book repair and processing.
  • Assist with various technical services projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Students must consult with the Technical Services Librarian when schedule changes are needed. Work schedules begin the first week of the semester, and run through exam week.
Environmental Conditions: 98% of work time is inside.

Physical Demands: Requires applicants to be able to transport books and other library materials over short distances.Ìý May involve extended hours of sitting at a desk.

Hofheimer Library, Office Assistant(s)

  • Each assistant must work a weekly schedule of 6.5-7 hours.Ìý
  • The weekday hours will be scheduled sometime between 8:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. each day.
  • Weekend hours are scheduled between 4pm & 10pm Sunday.

Computer Services, Help Desk Technician

This position will report to the User Support Manager and will assist faculty, staff and students with computer related issues. The student will answer telephone questions and direct contact in the lab. Must be dependable and courteous.

This position will report to the User Support Manager and will assist in maintaining/repairing the fleet of computers and technology assets owned by VWU.
