A New Chapter Begins for the Class of 2018
Diplomas in hand, 308 graduates set out to make their mark on the world.

It was a Commencement of firsts for Virginia Wesleyan on May 19. First Lady of Virginia Pamela Northam delivered the Commencement address, the Class of 2018 was the first class to graduate from Virginia Wesleyan "University," and the first class to be permitted to decorate their graduation caps. President Miller and Provost O'Rourke conferred degrees to the graduates, four faculty members were recognized with special awards, and four graduates were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. VWU President, Trustees Named to Inside Business "Power List" 
President Scott D. Miller and Trustees Vince Mastracco and Howard Kern are among those recognized as local leaders who, according to Inside Business Publisher Mike Herron, are the "most engaged in making things happen."  More 
    
Outstanding Performance in Athletics  
Each year the VWU Athletics Department recognizes outstanding student-athletes, coaches, and teams in a variety of categories. The 2018 award winners were announced at "The BOBS" Awards Ceremony on May 9.
Meeting and Greeting Community Partners
Virginia Wesleyan hosted a meet-and-greet for campus partners on May 18 in Pearce Hospitality Suite. The event was coordinated by Brian Kurisky, director of Wesleyan Engaged: Center for Civic Leadership and Service Learning.
Professor Retires after 25 Years  
Virginia Wesleyan bid farewell to retiring Professor of Management, Business, and Economics Ehsan Salek after 25 years of service to the institution. A reception in the Greer Environmental Sciences Center was held in his honor on May 10, followed by the traditional commemorative tree planting ceremony in the Wilson Arboretum. More   
Margolies Awarded Mednick Fellowship
Dr. Dan Margolies, Professor of History and Chair of the History Department and the American Studies Program, has been awarded the 2018 Maurice L. Mednick Memorial Fellowship by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. His project will focus on "Jurisdictional Disputes over Offshore Submerged Lands and the Spatiality of State Sovereignty, 1947-1953." More  
OKLAHOMA CITY BOUND!
The No. 1 Òùµ´ÉÙ¸¾ softball team is back in the NCAA Division III Championships in Oklahoma City after being crowned the Super Regional Champs on May 20 at Marlins Park.  
as the Marlins shut out Ithaca College, 6-0, in the first game played at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium on Thursday afternoon. With the win the Marlins, move to 51-2 on the year and move into the tournament's winner's bracket.

BACCALAUREATE SERVICE: Alumna Rev. Dr. Karla Kincannon, Director of Spiritual Formation, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, was the speaker for this year's Baccalaureate Service held at Haygood United Methodist Church on May 18. Rev. Kincannon received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree during the Commencement Ceremony.

Summer Session at VWU
Summer Session at VWU is for everyone, whether students are behind in coursework or planning to graduate early. Summer Session provides students with an opportunity to engage in specialty courses, complete General Studies requirements or advance in their major.
