Alumni Spotlight: Ryan Crooks ‘96

A physician's assistant for 22 years, Crooks was in the inaugural class at EVMS

University News | November 1, 2023

After graduating from Virginia Wesleyan with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1996, Ryan Crooks continued his education at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), earning a master’s degree in Physician Assistant (PA) Studies in 2001. Crooks was a member of the inaugural physician assistant class at EVMS and is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

He has worked in clinical settings as a PA for more than 22 years. Since 2013, he has been with Patient First in Virginia Beach as a staff PA and new provider trainer.

A member of the men's soccer team, Crooks remembers his time at Virginia Wesleyan fondly. “My best memories of my time at Wesleyan were home soccer games with large crowds and support from students and faculty alike— and winning most of those games!. More importantly, the bonds I made with teammates and others, I will never forget.”

He says that Drs. Jim and Betty Jefferson Harris had the greatest impact on him during his undergraduate years, academically preparing him for the future challenges of PA school.

Like Father, Like Son

Crooks’ son, Landon, is continuing in his father’s footsteps. Landon is now a junior at VWU also studying biology with plans to attend a physician assistant program after graduation.

“Landon is a member of the cross country and track team and is very active with many campus activities. I truly enjoy getting back on campus to just visit him, watch him compete, or catch a soccer game. It is amazing seeing the progress and development of Virginia Wesleyan and I’m honored to have my son there.”

He notes that there may soon be another Crooks on campus, as his youngest son, Braydon, has just recently sent in his application for fall 2024!
